 The extensive root systems of native plants help sponge up extra water & naturally filter pollutants while restoring biodiversity to our urban landscapes.

Our Chapter has created several native gardens in Brevard County, using nature-based solutions that prevent pollution while providing critical habitat for pollinators, migratory birds, and other local wildlife. 

Traditional landscaping practices depend on chemical fertilizers that overload waterways with nutrients, fueling toxic algae blooms that harm coral reefs & seagrasses.

By maintaining green spaces without fertilizer and capturing runoff, Ocean Friendly Gardens can help prevent harmful algal blooms and filter water pollution before it reaches our waterways and groundwater. 

As climate change increases the intensity and frequency of harmful algal bloom events, reducing nutrient pollution from our landscapes is more urgent than ever.
