The Right To Clean Water

Space Coast Surfrider is working hard to fight for clean water.  Not only does our chapter test bacteria levels in our local creeks, rivers, and ocean, we also encourage communities and residents to plant native plants which collect runoff pollutants, pulling carbon from the air and into plants, and creating wildlife habitats (bees, butterflies, birds, etc.).  Our Ocean Friendly Restaurant program tackles plastic pollution one restaurant, one customer at a time.  Researchers estimate up to 11 million metric tons of plastic waste is entering the ocean every year.  Who wants to eat plastic?  Beach cleanup results indicated the problem is not going away, and we as a community need to make behavioral changes and encourage our legislators to stand up for clean water.

Florida Rights of Nature Network supports Florida's watershed project and the "Right to Clean and Healthy Waters" Amendment to the Florida Constitution.  The amendment holds State executive agencies accountable for harmful or threatened harm to Florida's waters, including aquatic ecosystems.  Of Florida's 1,000 natural springs are polluted by excessive nitrogen.  Within our local streams, rivers, and ocean, fecal bacteria is shown in Surfrider's Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) results.  Manatee deaths were contributed to the result of polluted waters.  The frequency of red tides and blue-green algae blooms are becoming the norm.  What do we do?  We take action to amend Florida's Constitution.  For more information and act, please visit Right to Clean and Healthy Waters

Petition for the Amendment must be "inked" signed by registered Florida voters.  Contact Kathy Brandt at kbrandt32935@gmail.com.  Kathy will collect your petitions.  Get as many signatures as possible.  900,000 signatures are needed by November for Supreme Court review.  Thank you for doing your part for now and future generations.
