Board of Directors Meeting Minutes

Date: August 21, 2025
Time: 6:30 – 8:00 PM
Location: Intercoastal Brewing Company

1. Call to Order

Board Chair Nina Hunt called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM.

2. Icebreaker

Nina invited attendees to share their favorite coastal memory—whether it was a surf session, a meaningful beach cleanup, or a special moment by the sea.

3. Guest Speaker Presentation

Speaker: Katherine Booth, President of Let’s Be a Good Neighbor to the Lagoon

Katherine delivered a heartfelt and educational presentation on the vital importance of community-driven lagoon conservation. She emphasized the role individuals and neighborhoods can play in improving water quality through responsible landscaping, reduced pollution, and active stewardship. 

4. Announcements & Miscellaneous Updates

  • Ocean Friendly Gardens (OFG) Update – Bill:
    • Fall Planting Projects:
      • Suntree lakeside shoreline restoration
      • Swale and display garden off Wickham Road
    • Recent Weeding Events: Continued maintenance of current OFG sites
    • Volunteers are encouraged to assist in upcoming fall installations.
  • Board Positions Open:
    • Events Coordinator
    • Vice Chair
    • Goat Creek Water Tester (Blue Water Task Force)

5. Upcoming Events

  • August 30: A1A Highway Cleanup
    • Location: Spessard Holland South Beach Park
    • Time: 8:30–10:30 AM
  • September 17: General Meeting @ Tiny Turtle
    • Time: 6:30–8:00 PM
    • Speaker: Reef Boyz (Justin Spute & Mike)
      • A nonprofit dedicated to marine conservation, ocean education, and youth engagement through hands-on experiences
    • September 20: Member Surf Day + Beach Cleanup
      • Location: Tables Beach, Cocoa Beach (across from the base)
      • Time: 8:00–11:00 AM
      • Partners: Canaveral Surf, Space Coast Boardriders
    • October 11–13: 40th Anniversary NKF Surf Festival
      • Surfrider will host beach cleanups two out of the three days
      • Potential collaboration with NKF on the Taste of Brevard event – details to be confirmed (Joanie to follow up)
    • November 1: Sun, Sand, Surf Event
      • Volunteer opportunities available for tabling, vendor coordination, and sponsorships
      • Interested members should see Nina after the meeting to get involved

6. Closing Remarks

Nina Hunt thanked all attendees for their participation and engagement. Special thanks were extended to Intercoastal Brewing Company for hosting.

Everyone was encouraged to tip their servers generously, hang out, connect, and explore how they can get more involved in upcoming programs and initiatives.
