2024 Space Coast Dune Planting Event

On February 17, 2024, the Surfrider Space Coast Chapter, along with 55+ volunteers, helped plant 1,560 sea oats & native plants for dune restoration on the Space Coast of Florida.

The Surfrider Space Coast Chapter purchased the sea oats & 5 different native plant varieties (Beach Elder, Spartina patens, panic grass, sea purslane, beach morning glory) helping support our Florida coastline.

Sea oats were planted on dunes at Coconut Point Park, and native plants were planted at the Barrier Island Wildlife Refuge Center in Melbourne Beach.

A big thank you to all of the volunteers & students who came to plant! Our little chapter is growing, and we couldn't be more grateful!

Did you know?

Native plants play a vital role in dune stabilization.

Sea oats root systems traps the sand, creating dunes and habitats for birds.

Dunes are also natures defense against coastal storms, helping prevent major coastal flooding during Hurricanes. They are vital to the health of our beaches.

By planting sea oats & other native plants on beach dunes, we are providing a boost & a helping hand to natures natural defense system.
