Bioswale Planting in Indialantic

On December 14, 2024, our Space Coast Surfrider Chapter, in partnership with the Florida Wildflower Foundation and Viva Florida program, hosted a transformative bioswale planting in Indialantic as part of the nationwide Ocean Friendly Gardens program. This inspiring project turned an ordinary swale into a thriving haven of Florida native plants and wildflowers.

Why bioswales? These Ocean Friendly Gardens restore natural watershed functions, prevent stormwater pollution, and enhance local water supplies. By replacing sod with native vegetation, we increase the uptake of nutrients and pollutants, making the bioswales more efficient in protecting the Indian River Lagoon.

Located along a well-traveled pedestrian and bike path, this vibrant native garden isn’t just a sight to behold—it’s a learning opportunity. Passersby can see how reducing sod footprints, planting native species, and restoring habitats for pollinators and migratory birds directly contribute to environmental stewardship. Additional benefits of the project include carbon capture, heat island reduction, and lower lawn maintenance.

This project exemplifies how native plants not only improve ecological health but also beautify our public spaces. We hope it inspires others to create similar pollinator gardens in their own backyards, contributing to a healthier, more sustainable community.

A huge thank you to our dedicated volunteers and everyone who made this possible. Stay tuned for more initiatives that bring nature back to the forefront of our daily lives!

What’s Next?
This bioswale is just the beginning of what’s possible through community-driven efforts like Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Gardens (OFG) program. As we look to the future, the success of this project inspires hope for more eco-friendly initiatives that will protect our waterways for generations to come.

Sign up for our newsletter to hear about upcoming OFG projects, and come to our chapter meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of every month!

Thank you to all the volunteers who joined us to plant, rake, and restore. Your passion and energy are vital to our mission of protecting and enjoying the ocean, waves, and beaches!
