Chapter Meeting Minutes

Date: January 15, 2025, 6:30-8 pm ET

Location: Tiny Turtle

 

  1. Call to Order: Board Chair Nina Hunt called the meeting to order at 6:30PM.
  2. Welcome and Icebreaker: Nina welcomed attendees and kicked off a brief introduction breakout session to encourage networking and engagement.
  3. Ocean Friendly Gardens Update: Presentation on Ocean Friendly Gardens:
    1. Bill, Chair of the Ocean Friendly Gardens program, shared insights into native plant restoration efforts aimed at improving water quality and biodiversity.
    2. Key accomplishments:
      • Establishment of native plant gardens across Brevard County.
      • Collaboration with community partners to address water quality and habitat restoration challenges.
    3. Emphasis on prioritizing Ocean Friendly Gardens on the Central East Coast to combat habitat destruction.
  4. Membership Update: Membership fee starts a $5 - a $50 donation includes a T-shirt as a welcome gift.
  5. Ocean Friendly Restaurants (OFR) Update: Joanie (OFR Chair) provided update on certified Ocean Friendly Restaurants, highlighting new certifications and partnerships.
  6. Upcoming Events & 2025 Schedule: Nina reviewed upcoming events and key dates:
    • January 17: Bonfire @ James Nance Park, Indialantic (4:30–8 PM)
      • BYOB, snacks, chairs, and warm clothes. S’mores will be provided.
    • January 25: Highway Cleanup (8:30–10:30 AM) @ Val M. Steele Park.
    • January 25: Lagoonapalooza (10 AM–6 PM)
      • Hosted at Mike Fiorini Environmental Learning Center.
      • Activities include live music, kid-friendly ecosystem activities, guided canoe trips, kayak rentals, and more. Suggested $10 donation.
      • Details: Discover ELC Lagoonapalooza.
    • February 8: Ribbon Cutting Event (10–11 AM) @ [Location TBD].
    • February 14: Private Beach Cleanup.
    • February 15: Dune Planting and Beach Cleanup @ Cherie Down Park, Cape Canaveral.
    • February 19: General Meeting @ Intracoastal Brewery (6:30–8 PM)
      • Speaker: Dani Lindsay, American Conservation Coalition (ACC).
    • March 8: Vintage Board Event (10 AM–4 PM) @ Satellite Beach Sports Complex
      • JoJo will provide additional details.
  7. Closing Remarks: Nina Hunt thanked attendees, encouraged tipping servers generously, and expressed gratitude to Tiny Turtle for hosting.
